“I sold the Black Magic.”
Those five words held enormous weight as I heard them last week. I knew it was coming. I knew a buyer was interested. Now it was DONE! Ah!
The Black Magic is a camera. An exceptional, high-quality production camera that has been involved in so many magical moments. It shoots cinematic footage, and it was the first 4K camera that my friend Gervais had ever owned.
For anyone who cannot follow the camera – speak, that basically means it shoots footage that is way beyond/better than regular HD – High Definition footage.
He had owned other cameras over the years, yet the purchase of the Black Magic Ursa marked a new era.
My very first music video, All Your Colours was shot on that camera.
I will never forget it. I could not sleep a wink the night before. I was staying at Emily’s house, and she was the makeup girl – so generous of her to allow me to stay. It was a 3:30am call to get up and be ready on the beach in Byron Bay in time for a spectacular sunrise, which we received.

I also had recording studio sessions filmed on the Black Magic as well as many other music videos.
Did I invest a lot of money to create these projects? Yes… And cameras like that are not cheap, so he had invested a lot in his equipment too.
Do I regret it? No way! I loved it.
The night we shot the music video for Brokenness my friend Shelley was dancing, so beautifully, and the guys decided to shoot her from way up high, so up went the camera with Nick to the top of the ladder while Ash and Gervais spotted him. It was heavy and expensive, so this was a big deal!
My jazz album live launch, My Romance was filmed on that camera.
My jazz videos for Seven Days, Love Love Love and many others were filmed on that camera.
The Behind the Scenes of Brokenness was filmed on that camera (on one of those blistering hot days in January!)
My music video “This Too Will Pass” was filmed on that camera. You can click HERE to view the video.
The very first interview for my thesis research with producer and guitarist Jim Kelly with filmed on that camera.
Singers I mentor had live videos filmed on that camera…
And many more projects…
I did not own the camera myself, nor would I even know how to use such a sophisticated piece of equipment, yet it had been a part of so many important events in my life. It was familiar to me. And now it was no longer!?
Gervais made the decision to sell it and deep down I knew all the reasons made perfect sense logically. He has multiple cameras now that can produce similar footage… And he gave other reasons that helped this decision make sense. He bought the Black Magic in December 2013, and I had booked him for various jobs since then, so it had been around a few years.
So WHY did I feel half sad and half in agreement with his choice?
Why my split feelings?
Because I had made those magical moments become inextricably linked with the camera. A piece of equipment! That is all it is. Gear. A tool. A resource for people to create things.
The lesson here is this:
We need to be prepared to let go of things, to receive what is next. Let go to receive the new. That was then, this is now. Read the season, understand the season.
The Black Magic served its purpose brilliantly! And it was for that season. This new season post-BMC (post-Black Magic Camera) is now an open door and full of possibilities. I will really miss it, though!
All you empathetic and sensitive types totally understand me right now… Even though everyone else is able to say, “It is only a CAMERA!”
So to sum up I am really grateful for all the amazing times that the BMC was involved in, I now choose to let go of that season (almost… Not quite fully yet… Ha-ha… Soon… Even though the camera is already gone actually..) and I await the new season with more creations and ideas to be captured by NEW and different equipment!
Thank you, awesome Black Magic Camera!
I hope this inspires you to separate important moments from things. We can let go of the things that have finished their season, and keep the moments in our heart. And if your soul is simply not robust enough to let some things go – ask someone else to move it on, sell it, take it out of your home…whatever you need to get it done!
